The Institute of the Americas/Institut des Amériques (IDA)

The project to create the Institute of the Americas started in the 1990s. Jean-Michel Blanquer and Jean-Michel Lacroix were the founders of the Institute, launched officially by France’s Minister of National Education in the presence of all ambassadors of the Americas in March 2007. It is a Scientific Interest Group (GIS/Groupement d’intérêt scientifique) supported by the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French Ministry of Higher Education and the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

The primary mission of the IDA is to be a leading European institution dedicated to the study of the American continent. The Institute contributes to the dynamics of research on the Americas through the organization and support of scientific events (e.g. the annual symposium) and by granting thesis awards and support for doctoral research. It coordinates studies in the humanities and social sciences by developing a trans-American and cross-disciplinary approach, and ensures the promotion of international chairs for the study of the Americas in France. Comprising a network of 62 French higher education institutions (universities and “grandes écoles”), it brings together more than 1000 researchers. It also contributes to the spread of French research through the publishing partnerships with Armand Colin and Rennes University Press, as well as through the publication of the four-language online journal, IdeAs.

Although IDA is a French institution, it contributes in significant ways to Canada–France relations and to Canadian studies in France. The Institute has signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Montreal enabling a French doctoral student to study in Montreal for a period of three years. Since 2012, when Ottawa’s support for Canadian studies abroad was terminated, the IDA has provided administrative support for regional Canadian studies centers, financial support for some of their projects, and generously hosts the AFEC secretariat in a small office in Paris.
